Where to Eat Lunch in Downtown Boston
Author: Derian Restrepo, Assistant General Manager
If you work in downtown Boston, you might know this feeling: there’s food everywhere, but nothing good to eat. And if you’re visiting our fine city for the first time, the process of finding good places for lunch in Boston can feel pretty overwhelming. The Financial District isn't short on restaurants — it's short on actually good food that keeps you energized for the rest of the day. I work in the area, so I’ve been eating lunch in downtown Boston for years. Here's where I actually go.
The Lineup

The Lineup is hands down one of my favorite lunch places in Boston. It’s a fan-favorite food hall run by Chef John Fraser, located inside the Winthrop Center. You’ll find a variety of options, so you can come here every day and try something new each time. It’s also fast and convenient for anyone commuting to downtown, just a few minutes from South Station and several other T stations. It's fast, it's casual, and the quality is leagues above the rest of the grab-and-go spots in the neighborhood. In fact, John Fraser is a Michelin-acclaimed chef who brought his training to the food hall experience. There’s plenty of seating inside the food hall as well, so you can always invite a colleague to join you for lunch or take cover on a rainy day. Here's what they have:
Day Shift

Day Shift is a café-style concept selling coffee, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, smoothies, and more. Whether I’m grabbing a quick coffee on the way to the office or treating myself to a flaky pastry on a quick break, Day Shift always has the pick-me-up I need.
Gatto Pazzo

Gatto Pazzo does Neapolitan pizza like nowhere else in Boston. They use high-heat ovens, so you get that famous leopard-spotted crust. They have all the classics, like margherita and pepperoni, but they also offer unique takes on your average pie. You can also get delicious Italian sandwiches and cannolis here.
Big Grin

Big Grin is nostalgic food at its finest. This spot serves up smash burgers, crinkle fries, and shakes. Chef John Fraser grew up in California, the home of the smash burger, and it shows. The crust on the patty is always just right, and one of their famous milkshakes can turn a bad workday into a good one.
Iris Mezze

Iris Mezze is a build-your-own menu, with Greek bowls and pitas that you can stack high with vegetables, grains, proteins, and spreads. Plus, their hummus is the best in the city. Great for a light and healthy lunch in downtown Boston. There are also rotating pop-up kiosks that change regularly, which always keep me coming back for more. Every time I think they can’t outdo themselves with a new concept, they prove me wrong. In fact, I’ve recommended their catering options to several of my colleagues and friends (they’re perfect for corporate events as well). Check out the menu page to see what's in the rotation right now, or order online for pickup.
Vermilion

If you’re looking for something more upscale, Vermilion is the best lunch in Boston for business meetings or entertaining clients. This popular steakhouse is located right upstairs from The Lineup inside Winthrop Center, and it’s led by the same team. Their menu centers around New England classics with seasonal rotations and innovative culinary techniques. I often go for the Express Lunch, where you can get two courses for $35 or three for $45. Just make sure to book your table in advance — this place fills up fast. The beverage program is its own reason to go. It's run by Amy Racine, a James Beard award-nominated Beverage Director with a Beverage Book that has over 70 innovative creations. This includes specialty cocktails, classics with a twist, and a wine list that complements the menu. If you're entertaining a client over lunch, ordering off that book does some of the work for you. They also host Happy Hour on weekdays from 3–6 pm with specialty cocktails and bar bites.
Outdoor Lunch Spots in Downtown
Some of the best lunch spots in Boston are the benches and picnic tables in our stunning green spaces. There are a ton of parks in Boston, and many of them are right in the heart of downtown. I often pick up food from The Lineup and go soak up the sun in one of these spots:
Norman B. Leventhal Park (Post Office Square)
Post Office Square is one of Boston’s best hidden gems, tucked away right in the Financial District. It's a full city block of green space with benches, fountain seating, and shade trees surrounded by soaring office buildings. It’s one of my favorite Boston lunch spots because it’s close to the heart of downtown, it’s beautiful, and it has plenty of places to sit.
Boston Common
Boston Common is the oldest public park in the country, and there are plenty of benches, lawn space, and shade to post up with your food. It's a bit farther from downtown (about 10-15 minutes), so it's better for days when you've got a little more time to spare. If you’re enjoying a Boston summer, grab a spot near the Frog Pond or just find an open patch of grass.
The Rose Kennedy Greenway
The Rose Kennedy Greenway is a mile-long stretch of parks and public art that runs along the edge of the Financial District. It replaced the old elevated highway that used to cut through the neighborhood, and the city transformed it into one of the best public spaces in downtown Boston. There are benches, open lawns, public art installations, and usually a few food trucks in the warmer months.
The Waterfront
If you've got a little extra time, the waterfront by the harbor is a great place to eat lunch in Boston. It's about 10-12 minutes from South Station but once you're there, it doesn't feel like downtown anymore — just open water, boats, and a break from staring at your screen.
Level Up Your Lunch at The Lineup

Lunch breaks are everyone’s favorite part of the workday, which is why I always try to make mine count. The Lineup is my go-to lunch spot in downtown Boston for quick, delicious meals that keep me fueled up for the rest of the day.
